14-Day Sumatra Tour

Deep forests, fertile rice fields, and steaming volcanoes-Sumatra has it all.
This 14-day tour ensures you can see and experience the very best of North Sumatra,
with experienced guides sharing their knowledge and culture with you.

 
 
 
 

Itinerary

Day 1 – Arrival

We will meet you with a private car at Medan Airport and transfer you to Bukit Lawang. You will stay at our accommodation, Sumatra Orangutan Discovery Villa. When you arrive, you can relax in our garden or enjoy a cold drink overlooking the forest-covered mountains. On your first evening, you will meet your jungle guide for a briefing about the next day’s trek.

 

Day 2/3/4 – Gunung Leuser National Park, 3-Day Jungle Trek
This 3-day trek allows you to fully immerse yourself in the rainforest and increases your chances of seeing its beautiful wildlife. During your three days in the jungle, you will have more opportunities to see unique wildlife such as orangutans, Thomas Leaf Monkeys, pig-tailed macaques, gibbons, and various birds and reptiles. You will stay at two different campsites; each located near a river or stream area for swimming. Fresh fruit and lunch will be provided in the jungle. In the evening at camp, you will be served local food prepared by our camping chef.

On the third day, you will have the opportunity to visit a beautiful waterfall, followed by lunch and an exciting rafting trip back to your starting point.
 
This trek is suitable for those who truly enjoy trekking and have a moderate level of fitness.
 
At 3 PM you will return to our accommodation, where you are free to enjoy your afternoon.
 
 

 

Day 5 – Eco Village Bicycle Tour
After breakfast, your guide will meet you at 8:30 AM, and at 9 AM you will depart for the Village Bicycle Tour.
 
We will ride along small roads through rice fields and villages to meet local people and observe or take part in traditional practices.
 
During the tour you will see how palm sugar is made, stopping at a local family home to watch the process. Once cooked, you can taste palm sugar juice and try a piece of “Gula Merah,” a solid sugar cake. We provide funds for their services.

Next, we will stop at a tofu and tempeh producer where you can see how soybeans are processed. If you would like to buy and taste freshly cooked tofu, you may do so.
 
Our tour will pass through local farmland, palm oil plantations, rubber plantations, cacao farms, and rice fields. Along the way, your guide will stop and demonstrate how local farmers harvest and process these materials.
 
After this tour, you will feel closer to Indonesian culture and have experienced local life, language, and traditions.
 
Lunch is included in the Village Tour.
 

By 3:30 PM you will be back at our accommodation, and you are free to enjoy your afternoon.
 
 

 
Day 6 – Cooking Class

Today you will take part in an authentic Indonesian cooking class. After a relaxing morning, you will visit the local market to learn about local fruits and vegetables. After purchasing your ingredients and learning a little Bahasa Indonesia, you will return to our kitchen to cook with our chef. You will learn how to combine and blend traditional Indonesian spices to prepare some famous dishes such as chili sambal, rendang, coconut curry, semur, and other dishes. We can accommodate vegan, vegetarian, or meat options.



Day 7 – Travel to Berastagi
Setting off around 6 AM, we will travel by private car to Berastagi, a cool and lush area located in the northern province of Sumatra.

 
En route, we will stop at Sipiso-piso Waterfall, the largest waterfall in Sumatra, where you can enjoy the view and relax before continuing our journey. We will also stop at the traditional Batak king’s house of the Simalungun Batak in Pematang Purba.
 

By evening we will arrive in Berastagi. Here we will stay overnight at the four-star Sinabung Hill Resort in one of their cottages.




Day 8 – Sunrise Volcano Hike, Mount Sibayak

We will wake up early at 3:30 AM to travel to the nearby volcano, Mount Sibayak, for a sunrise hike. This two-hour hike will take you to the summit for fantastic views overlooking the town of Berastagi and the surrounding area. Although this volcano is still active, its last eruption was many centuries ago. However, geothermal activity still creates steam vents and hot springs in the surrounding area. After descending the volcano, we will head to the hot springs at Sibayak View, where you can relax your muscles in the mineral-rich waters, followed by a local lunch overlooking the volcano. Return to Sinabung Hill Resort in the early evening.




Day 9 – Travel to Samosir Island (Lake Toba)

Half the day will be spent traveling to Lake Toba. Upon arrival, you will have the afternoon to relax at your accommodation, kayak on the lake, or relax by the pool if you wish.

 


Day 10 – Island Tour: Tomok, Ambarita, and Simanindo
Wake up and enjoy breakfast. We will set off at 9 AM to tour the island by private car.
 
During this trip, we will travel to the high point of the island for stunning panoramic views, experience local culture, and see traditional Batak life, architecture, and history.
We will visit Ambarita to learn about the history of the stone chairs and execution table, followed by a visit to King Sidabutar’s grave. We will also stop at a weaving village where you can see women producing beautiful woven sarongs and fabrics on traditional looms.

 


Day 11 – Free Day

Today is yours to spend as you wish and explore at your own pace.
 

 

Day 12 – Samosir Island Coffee Tour (Half Day)
The Samosir Island coffee tour is a great way to learn about coffee processing, visit plantations and farms, and taste some excellent local coffee.



Day 13 – Leaving Samosir and Traveling to Medan

After breakfast, we will leave the island at 11 AM. Say goodbye to Samosir Island as we take the ferry crossing and travel to Medan city. Here, you may take part in a city tour to see some of the historic sights if you wish.
 
Your final night will be spent in Medan, ready for your flight the next day.

 

 


Day 14 – Private Transfer to Medan Airport for Departure
