9-Day Sumatra Tour
Join us for an incredible 9-day overland Sumatra tour!
See orangutans in the dense rainforest, complete a sunrise hike, climb a steaming volcano, and explore the ancient culture of Samosir Island, which surrounds the largest volcanic lake in the world.

Itinerary
Day 1 – Arrival
and Airport Pick-up from Kuala Namu, Medan
Arrive at Sumatra Orangutan Discovery Villa and enjoy relaxing in our tropical garden.
Day 2/3 – Gunung Leuser National Park Overnight Trek
Start the day with our healthy and delicious breakfast options.
Depart at 9 AM for your two-day jungle trek to see orangutans and other unique wildlife.
During your trek, your guide will explain about the local flora and fauna. You will be given fresh fruits and lunch in the jungle. After a satisfying day of trekking, you will arrive at our campsite located near the river. You will then be served local food prepared by our camping chef.
The next day you will have the opportunity to visit a beautiful waterfall, followed by lunch and then an exciting rafting trip back to your starting point.
At 3 PM you will return to our accommodation, just in time to shower and enjoy an evening of guitar music and Indonesian food.
Day 4 – Village Life Bicycle Tour
After breakfast you will begin the village bicycle tour, accompanied by our guide (optional to go by tuk-tuk if preferred).
You will explore the local area, following rural paths through rice fields and villages to see local life.
During your tour you will see how palm sugar is made, stopping at a local family home to watch the process. Once it is cooked, you can taste palm sugar juice and try a piece of “Gula Merah,” a solid sugar cake. We provide funds for their services.
Next, we will stop at a tofu and tempe producer where you can see how soybeans are processed. If you would like to buy and taste freshly cooked tofu, you may do so.
Our tour will pass through local farmland, palm oil plantations, rubber plantations, cacao farms, and rice fields. Along the way, your guide will stop and demonstrate how local farmers are able to harvest and process these materials.
This tour will give you insight into Indonesian culture, language, and traditional rural life.
Lunch is included in the Village Tour.
By 3:30 PM you will be back at Sumatra Orangutan Discovery Villa.
Day 5 – Travel to Berastagi
After breakfast, set off by private car to the mountainous region of Berastagi, famous for Karo culture.
Here you will stay at a wonderful family-run accommodation on the outskirts of the town with a view of the steaming volcano, Mount Sibayak.
The next morning, wake early around 4:30 AM to begin your sunrise trek to the top of the volcano. As the sun lights up the valleys, enjoy incredible panoramic views over the town below and the lush hillsides.
On the way back down, stop to see the bright yellow Sulphur pools and steaming craters. Once you descend from the volcano, you will stop at the hot springs, where your tired muscles can relax and enjoy the benefits of the natural minerals.
After lunch, you will set off by private car to the island of Samosir in Lake Toba. Our private car will drop you at the small passenger ferry, where you will be taken to your lakeside accommodation.
Day 7 – Free Day to Enjoy Samosir
Today is a free day, so you may enjoy a relaxing morning with breakfast included. The car, driver, and guide will be available should you wish to visit anywhere.
Day 8 – Island Tour: Tomok, Ambarita, and Simanindo
Wake up and enjoy breakfast. We will set off at 9 AM to tour the island.
This classic island tour includes visiting a traditional weaving village, stopping at a panoramic viewpoint over the island, visiting Ambarita to learn about the history of the stone chairs and execution table, and visiting King Sidabutar’s grave.
Lunch is included in this tour.
Day 9 – Private Transport to Medan
If time allows, a short historical tour of Medan is possible with stops at historical sites before being dropped at your final hotel.
