Tangkahan Hot Springs
Tangkahan is a small village located about two hours’ drive from Bukit Lawang. Often referred to as a “hidden paradise,” the village offers deep tropical rainforest, natural hot springs, and the beautiful Kuala Buluh River.
Originally, the village of Tangkahan was built on the logging trade. However, the community collectively decided to stop illegal logging and instead develop the area as an eco-tourism destination. In 2001, they established the Tangkahan Tourism Institute as a way to protect the surrounding forest from exploitation and damage.
The Sumatran Elephant, which were previously used in logging activities, were relocated to an elephant camp where they now help protect the national park. The Conservation Response Unit (CRU) was also formed to support conservation efforts in the area.
The treatment of Sumatran elephants has improved significantly in recent years, and elephant walks have become a popular way for visitors to see them up close.
However, because the elephants are still sometimes required to perform tricks, we do not actively promote the elephant camp. This remains a highly debated topic and has been a difficult decision for us, as we still want to support the local community of Tangkahan.
