FIVE-DAY TREKKING ITINERARY
This five-day journey is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. It offers you an incredible opportunity to enter the habitat of wild elephants. Our experienced guides will lead you along the riverbanks, where you may spot elephant footprints and feeding areas. If you are lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of a herd of wild elephants coming down to drink from the river.
This trek is designed for those with a good level of fitness who are looking for a real adventure and physical challenge.
Your English-speaking guide will meet you at your hotel at 8:30 AM, and departure is at 9:00 AM. The trek begins on the edge of Bukit Lawang as you hike uphill through local plantations before entering the rainforest. During the first few hours, you have a very high chance of seeing semi-wild and wild orangutans. You will continue trekking through the rainforest, walking up and down hills and crossing small streams with clear water. After a few hours, you will stop for a break while your guide prepares a plate of fresh tropical fruit. Take this opportunity to rehydrate, relax, and enjoy the sounds of the jungle.
As you venture deeper into the forest, your guide will introduce you to various plant species and explain more about the ecosystem of Gunung Leuser National Park. Depending on availability, you may also have the opportunity to try traditional jungle foods such as wild ferns, fresh river fish, young bamboo shoots, and banana tree stem.
Around 3:30 PM (or later), you will arrive at your campsite, located near a clean river or natural swimming spot perfect for cooling off and refreshing yourself.
Dinner will be prepared by our camp chef. Meat, vegetarian, and vegan options are available.
Our tents are designed for comfort and include thick foam mattresses, mosquito nets, blankets, and bed sheets.
The next morning, you will wake up to sunlight shining through the trees and the sounds of birds calling. The campsite area offers opportunities to spot hornbills, other bird species, monitor lizards, and butterflies.
Your chef will prepare hot coffee or tea along with breakfast before you begin another 5–6 hours of trekking.
Each day you will venture deeper into the jungle, increasing your chances of spotting more wildlife, including wild orangutans and black or white-handed gibbons. As you progress further into the forest, you will sleep on the inflatable mattresses we provide.
On the final day, you will return to town by traditional jungle raft. Get ready for an exciting and adventurous ride and don’t forget to watch for wildlife along the riverbanks!
The raft is made from rubber tires, and your guide will steer it down the river using a long pole.
