Four-Day Itinerary

This four-day adventure takes you deeper into the rainforest, offering a true jungle experience while learning about the unique ecosystem of Gunung Leuser National Park.

This trek is designed for those with a good level of fitness who are looking for more of a challenge. You will stay at three different jungle campsites; each located near beautiful natural swimming spots. Along the way, your expert guides will teach you basic jungle survival skills.

Depending on availability, you may also have the opportunity to taste traditional jungle foods such as wild fern, young bamboo shoots, and banana tree stem.

Your English-speaking guide will meet you at your hotel at 8:30 AM, and the trek will begin at 9:00 AM from the edge of Bukit Lawang. You will first walk uphill through local plantations before entering the rainforest. During the first few hours, you will have a high chance of spotting semi-wild and wild Sumatran orangutan. The trek continues through the tropical rainforest, with a mix of uphill and downhill hiking. You will pass small clear streams along the way.

After a few hours, your guide will prepare a fresh fruit platter. This is a great time to rehydrate, relax, and listen to the natural sounds of the jungle.

You will then continue deeper into the forest, where your guide will introduce you to various plant species and explain more about the unique ecosystem of Gunung Leuser.

At around 3:30 PM, you will arrive at your riverside campsite, perfect for swimming and cooling off after the hike.

In the evening, relax and enjoy a delicious local dinner prepared by our camp cook. You may spend the night learning traditional jungle games, singing songs, and experiencing the different sounds of the forest after dark. Your campsite is designed for comfort, with thick foam mattresses, mosquito nets, blankets, and bed sheets provided.

The next day, you will wake up to sunlight filtering through the trees and the sound of birds calling. The campsite area often offers opportunities to spot hornbills, other bird species, monitor lizards, and butterflies.

After breakfast with hot coffee or tea, you will begin another 5–6 hours of trekking.

Each day takes you deeper into the jungle. With some luck, you may encounter more wild orangutans, as well as black gibbons or white-handed gibbons.

You will usually arrive at the next campsite around 3:30–4:00 PM, always located near a refreshing swimming spot. After a long day of trekking, you can relax, swim, and fully enjoy the peaceful natural surroundings. Dinner will be freshly prepared by the camp cook.

At night, you will sleep comfortably on-air mattresses, and if you’re lucky, you may see fireflies glowing along the riverbanks.

On the final day, you will return to the village by traditional jungle rafting. The raft is made from large rubber tubes, and your guides will steer you down the river using long wooden poles.

You will be back in Bukit Lawang at approximately 2:00 PM,

Fantastic 3-Night Jungle Trek

Review of: Jungle Trekking

We joined a three-day/four-night trek in January 2020, and everything was perfectly organized for us — all we had to do was show up and enjoy the adventure. We also received excellent travel advice beforehand. The food was delicious, and the wildlife sightings were even more impressive.

During the trek, we saw Sumatran orangutan, Thomas's leaf monkey, monitor lizards, and hornbills. Swimming in the river and beneath waterfalls was an absolute highlight and incredibly refreshing after a day of hiking.

The team were wonderful hosts, and our guide was outstanding knowledgeable, supportive, and passionate about the jungle. Thank you for taking such great care of us. Diolch!
